So I think this is the longest I've gone without posting on the blog in the 14 years it's been running! Life has just been so busy. We sat down and worked out that last night was the first night in 3 weeks where we all sat and ate as a family, without someone being somewhere else, or all of us being somewhere else!
Hopefully the summer holidays will be a chance for us to reset a little bit and enjoy being at home.
Of course that doesn't mean we're planning on taking things easy - to make things a little harder for ourselves we got some pigs! These are the first four legged animals (other than the cat) since the sheep. So a few years ago now.
They were bred at one of the local private schools, I'm friends with the head there. They were born about 8 - 9 weeks ago and are already friendly.
The breed is Oxford Sandy and Black, they are pure bred, but aren't breed standard in their colouring, so won't ever be good for breeding. Instead they will come here for a few months before their final destination.
I'm already in love with them and find myself wondering over to the pig pen to see what they're doing - which is generally sleeping to be honest!
Should be a fun little adventure.
Oh my gosh, welcome back Kev, nice to see you again, but I knew you'd be madly busy all summer anyway. Sounds like you don't get a minute to sit down! Well, there's a novelty, pigs. They look nice but dare I ask what their final destination is?...
ReplyDeleteI completely understand the absence. Summer is really busy for those of us with large gardens that need constant attention. I live for those 7 or 8 weeks after New Year's Day is past when it is too cold (over here) to even venture outside much. I'll start a fire and spend the entire day reading, napping and dreaming of how busy I'll be this summer!
ReplyDeleteWe used to raise hogs on our farm. We had 150 sows and raised them from farrow to finish. Pigs are very interesting creatures and extremely smart. They could figure out just about any fence lock we ever put in that they could get their snout on. They also had strong jaws and would eventually crush any gate made of welded pipe.

ReplyDeleteI smiled about your pleasure in watching pigs. You are like the Earl of Blandings (PG Wodehouse) and Colonel Bantry (Agatha Christie). Bantry described pigs as the philosophers of the animal kingdom.
ReplyDeleteDan and I enjoyed having pigs. It was a good learning experience for us. We always thought we get them again once we had a better setup for them, but that hasn't happened.
