My wife (not pictured above) ended up with some extra school holiday, which meant that we could take advantage of a trip that was a little cheaper than ones in normal school holidays. She mentioned it to me, with their nan staying and looking after them, and I said I'd always fancied Budapest. Next thing I know she's booked it, from the Monday until the Thursday. Cheap flights, a nice hotel and a busy city, very different to our day to day lives.
We learnt loads about the history of Budapest as well. A bit of a rocky road, you could say, and they were just preparing for some celebrations of the 1956 revolution (unfortunately short lived) against the soviets, with streets closed and police everywhere as EU dignitaries were driven around the city to different events.
The food was incredible as well, filling and hearty. I suffer with food intolerances (cow's dairy) but didn't have to worry too much here. The portions were big, the quality was high and every one was friendly (I know they want my money) so I could ask questions easily.
A fabulous trip that made me want to travel again more. Sometimes we become very secure in our own little worlds, my smallholding here and the village around us is mine, and it's good to look at the bigger picture, see what's out there.
I suppose that leaves me with where to next? In our twenties we had a campervan (which I made out of an old ambulance) and we drive around a lot of western Europe, it would be good to visit a few more places now the children are getting older - with and without them!

Gosh, to have so many cultural adventures so close, what a treat. From the US any foreign travel takes a long and expensive trip just to get there. The food looks especially amazing.
ReplyDeleteYeah, With the rest or Europe so close it makes it easy to travel and cheap as well. I think it's great for learning loads about history, the hope is then it's less likely to repeat itself but that doesn't seemed to have worked on a larger scale....
DeleteI don't think our kids every minded us going on vacations without them. I think they felt it was sort of a vacation itself just to be home without us around. But like good parents, we don't do it very often and drag them around so that they experience different cultures and areas as much as possible. Once in awhile however, it is nice to be just a duo again and we are now within a handful of years before it will become likely full time again.
ReplyDeleteI think the children enjoyed it really, a bit more responsibility. I think middle child was more annoyed at why we'd want to go anywhere without them! First time I missed a family hoilday I was 14 to look after the farm!
DeleteHow lovely Kev, it's good to get away and have some time to yourselves. Kids are over-catered for these days, (not yours I hasten to add!) and they need to learn that parents are entitled to their own activities too and that the world doesn't just revolve around them. Glad you had a good time, you deserve it!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about the over catered bit, the children we're surrounded by that aren't ours are all very well rounded and understand that life has ebs and flows. It was nice to travel a bit more easily though and a lot cheaper!
