My sheep drank over 500 litres in half a week before they were shorn.
The springs round are all up hill so I need a way to get up there and back. Some good ones are just off the road though so easy access. After the big freeze this winter the thaw caused burst mains pipes which put the mains off for 3 days!
Not so bad in winter with all the water butts full, but this dry spell has highlighted to us the need for more rain collection over winter.
Thanks for your interesting article. :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02294486361009100674noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3078806588853616263.post-10155451583048619442018-07-07T07:54:50.212+01:002018-07-07T07:54:50.212+01:00I keep a three day supply of water but I'm the...I keep a three day supply of water but I'm the only person I know that keeps any. They've replaced the water main now, but for a long time the old pipe would burst frequently and we'd have no water, but still none of my neighbours kept more than a bottle of Evian!
I have some supermarket bottles and also some 25L containers with tap water and a small amount of bleach (1 tsp per gallon) which will evaporate if left open or use this water for washing etc.
We have pets as well as our poultry and the US recommendations are 1/2 gallon/day per dog and 1/4 gallon per day per cat so that's almost another 5 gallons for us to store for a 3 day supply. It all adds up!
I have a water filter I'm happy with, but a source of water is harder. There's a stream in the village but it's down a steep hill, so coming back wouldn't be much fun, similarly the only local spring I've found. We do have plans to create a splash pool in one corner of the garden so I think that might be my best bet. (a pond, not a swimming pool!)
I'd really recommend Independence Days by Sharon Astyk. It's largely about food preservation but with an emphasis on freeing yourself from the industrial food system and being resilient, so prepping without the bunkers and MRE's! I think she talks a lot of sense and it's full of practical information.Hazelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05388175819512214533noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3078806588853616263.post-30822569825734077472018-07-07T07:48:31.047+01:002018-07-07T07:48:31.047+01:00Interesting post Kev and well thought out.
