Talking with John in the comments on my last post, I thought I'd share another wooden axe cover on the course from a young carpenter, Ethan, who had this one in oak.
Very simple design that makes the axe easy to recognise in an instant, protects the edge and has a nice decorative element to it.
I think in the days before phones, TV and social media doing something like this around the fire would have been a nice way to spend an evening while chatting with friends.
Do you prefer a more simple design like this? Or more complicated one like the previous post? I may have to make another one yet.

I guess if I were buying one, I would prefer the ones in your previous post. But if making one for myself, I would just make one unique to me and be perfectly happy regardless if it were simple or complicated.
ReplyDeleteI would probably like the simpler design if the axe was a regularly used item, perhaps the more intricate design would suit an axe that perhaps was “more prized” or had more resonance with/for the owner if that makes sense?
ReplyDeleteBoth have merit. The face is an amazing bit of carving, I would like a female version for my small axe. The simpler one would be good for the big axe that regularly gets abused by flinging it onto the floor.
