We'e got back form our weeks holiday. A bit different this year - no Wales for us for our full holiday (although we did have a weekend there a few weeks back), this time we went to the Netherlands.
This meant getting the ferry - the first time for the youngest two children (eldest had a school trip to France earlier in the year).
Growing up I had some great holiday with Eurocamp in France, Germany and Luxemburg, and when I was saying this to my wife a few months back it obviously sowed a seed. We decided Netherlands as none of us are amazing with the heat, and it also didn't mean too much driving the other side of the ferry - in fact hardly any as we just used their amazing public transport when we were there.
The campsite also had a bit of a twist - It was in a place called Duinrell that was also a themepark! Not what you'd think of me I'm sure, but we had access to this theme park every day and I loved it! So did the children. It was a perfect themepark for their age, the rides were scary, but not too scary, lots of fun rides as well, but no queues whatsoever - that's the bit I hate of themeparks normally.
So we could run from one ride to the next - I think the longest we wait was 15 minutes. Such great fun.
There was also a big water park there as well, we had to pay to go into this, and went three times, but it was awesome fun, with huge slides. I found out that middlest is as brave as me and will go on everything, youngest will go on everything but takes some convincing, eldest is not so keen and my wife will go on a few things if forced!
We also tried to take in a bit of culture. Went to The Hauge one day, took in some museums and had a walk around the city.
We also went to Amsterdam, by bus then train. This was great. 20 years since my wife and I were last there. Lets just say that we took in very different sights to last time!
The kids loved it, we took a boat tour of the canals and they really enjoyed this bit. I think I have brought up some proper hillbillies though as they weren't so keen on the very busy and built up middle!
We also walked to the beach, about 5km from where we were camping. Tried to have a picnic, got attacked by a lot of seagulls! Was quite funny, for me anyway.
And I think now we have to finally put a nail in the coffin of childrens portions. Even the waitress couldn't believe Youngest had eaten all of these ribs himself (fairly sure he would have started on mine if I'd let him).
they really enjoy travelling, and although I'm happiest at home I know it's great to get them out to see the world, it's good for all of us. I loved it.
Looks a good trip. Enjoy your family holidays while you can. They soon grow up and want to go on their holidays with their pals.
ReplyDeleteVery much part of growing up! I enjoy a weekend away every year with my family still. Nice not to be the most responsible one there for a change.
DeleteThey all look so grown up now! Time flies since your early blog posts with playschool and new born son!
ReplyDeleteI know! Really does fly. I like to think I've made the most of it where I can.
DeleteLooks like a lot of fun was had!
ReplyDeleteOne thing I dislike about living in the middle of the United States is that other countries are SO FAR AWAY! There is no mass transportation or ferries to take me to another country. I probably have to drive further than you did on this trip just to get to an airport which will then take me to another airport that can then fly me to a foreign country many hours later.
We moan about being 3 hours from the coast or airport! But then we're somewhere else. Years ago my wife and I got an old ambulance and I converted it to a camper and we drove round europe in it.
DeleteLooks like you had a great time Kev! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDelete(It was a very sad day here as well when we realized that we could no longer order for Na Clann off the children's menu...)
Yeah - Middlest still eats off the children's menu, but the other two eat as much as me!
