Yesterday we visited my brother and sister-in-laws place for the first time in ages. It was to meet their new baby (A tiny baby girl) and was lovely to chat and catch up.
It was great to see the kitchen I built from scratch in use and full of produce! It was a monster of a unit with huge doors and drawers.
The can rotators inside the unit are available via my Esty store or you can email me if you'd like any!
I think they picked a great colour and the whole kitchen really seems to work with the central island. I've asked them to send me some pictures of the whole thing when they get chance so I can share it on here.
Really simple dinner of pasta and tomato sauce. We picked from the garden about 35 fresh tomatoes of different sizes, shapes and colours, a clove of garlic, medium onion and a huge handful of basil along with some bought in chorizo used more as seasoning than anything else.
Tasted amazing and shows with a few good ingredients it's sometimes all you need.
And of course I had my two chefs with me. My eldest help chop the tomatoes and stir the dish, while my younger daughter made biscuits for pudding. Lovely to spend time in the kitchen like that, laughing and joking.
Now hand on heart I can honestly say I haven't finished all the other jobs in the house. There's a lot of painting to do, but everything else is pretty much there. Painting can be done on wet horrible days and with a few hours here and there
For seven years this was it for a kitchen, seems so tiny now.
So as the weather is good and I'm at a point with my paying work where I can take a short break from it, I decided to look at making a start with the new pantry area
Sometimes when I talk about what I'm doing on our little homestead people suggest things that would be useful in the kitchen. Our kitchen has one major downside - It's not very big! This limits the gizmo's I can have and limits me to a little hand blender and hand kitchen tools, not that that's a bad thing.
It measures just 10ft by 7ft but it has three doorways in it so making the usable space just 7ft by 7ft. This space includes the washing machine, dishwasher, fridge, sink, cooker and hob, plus just enough workspace to make a sandwich! In the 1950's, when they built this house, kitchen space wasn't such a priority as it is now.
Don't feel sorry for us though, we've got planning permission for an extension which will include a nice sized kitchen and this little kitchen will become a utility room. I plan on making the kitchen from scratch myself and we're going to spend a bit of time designing it so it works well for our little family and will last along time. a little more space would be nice though, it soon gets messy and some and when I'm dishing up food it can be a juggling act.
How big is everyone else's kitchen? Anyone got one smaller?
