Cob Oven

We were lucky enough to be invited to a friend's for tea the other night.

They cooked some amazing pizza in this cob oven they had built themselves as a family.

Now the idea is taking root in my mind and I keep think about where we can build one and what it would look like.

We had company!

Who on here has built their own outdoor oven or cooking area?

Cob or any other material I'd love to see some pictures or recommendations for more research.

  1. Kev check out the blog The Greening Of Gavin. He doesn't blog on there anymore but has lots of information about building his cob oven.
    Cheers, Karen.

  3. I don't have a cob oven, exactly. I will share this thought: Plain old corn cobs were my grandmother (the restaurant owner and magnificent cook) they were her favorite source of meat smoking fumes. Yep! She preferred corn cobs over hickory, mesquite or any of the other fancy smoking woods. I can vouch for her. I have started several people here on using cobs for smoking hams and bacon, etc. Now, not one of them wants to go back to the 'tried and true' wood chips. I'll bet the cob smoke contributes to the food you're enjoying from that oven.

    1. I'll have to try it although corn doesn't grow easily where we live. I normally only have a couple of dozen plants each year for sweet corn and then it's a gamble to see if it'll ripen. Still I'll save any we buy or grow and try it. I have plenty of oak shavings from work for customers.

    2. http://apsleycountrybakery.weebly.com/building-the-oven.html I'm not sure if it will work if you click on it but I did save it to my BLOG list & was able to retrieve it, so I'd just copy & paste. This guy set up a bakery & takes you thru the entire process. I was fascinated & saved it.

    3. That's a great link Sharon! That's an impressive oven. I love how it would need no maintenance and would last many years. I'm going back to look at how he does his bread in it. Thanks again!
