This weekend has been lots of scouts.
Our son was at a camp all weekend with cubs, he loved it and has come back with many stories. I popped over and helped put a few tents up Friday night and did call round on Saturday with ice creams for everyone. As a scout leader I think it aids transition if all the cubs know me for when they move up to scouts.
Then with my middle daughter (eldest is on a school trip), we went to an activity day with our district. I was asked to run a base and to have it as a challenge base. I was unsure what to do, but then my mate suggested a hammer base. Take some logs, nails and hammers and teach them how to drive a nail in. So some racing to see who could knock a nail in.
I went with this but I was worried that they wouldn't find it very entertaining and my base might be empty for most of the day.
Turns out I was very wrong! They couldn't get enough of it. I had to tell people to leave so others could have a go. One group found a split and kept adding nails in the hope they could get it to cleave apart.
With all the other activities I was surprised they liked this. There was axe throwing, air pistol shooting, crossbows, archery, welshcake making, damper bread making, pancake making, fire lighting, lock picking and paracord making.
My daughter loved it, only downside was we didn't have that many scouts, but I suppose that made it more chilled out. We didn't really set time limits so the scouts could go around and choose what they wanted to do and if something interested them spend a bit more time doing it.
A fun day, and a nice one to spend with one of my children, which doesn't happen that often really.
