Review Of My 2024

The years seem to be getting faster, Honestly can't believe how fast this one has gone by.

Children And Family

One thing with family is how much things continue to change, we all grow and develop and it's never more apparent than when you have children of a certain age. All three of mine seem to be growing up so fast at the moment, and I'm very aware it's a very cliché thing to say!

I shouldn't jinx things, but we seem to have found a bit of a groove with the diabetes this year. Our eldest agreed to try a pump, this is on what they call a "closed loop system". This has some AI built into it and learns how her body deals with sugar it is given and how to give her the insulin through the day. We still have to carb count, work out her bolus for meals (with ratios that change quite frequently), and we often have to do correction doses at night, but it has meant no more multiple injections. Before the summer, some days she was having 8 injections of insulin a day, I'd frequently get up in the night to give her some insulin and she'd fall asleep mid injection she'd be so tired from it!

Books Read of 2024

I set myself a goal of reading 52 book this year, somewhere near what I used to read before smart phones came in and made our lives "better". I broke the goal at the start of December, and have finished the year with 60 books under my belt. I do include audio books and the longer books I read to the children.

Posting this a little earlier than I normally do, but I can't see me finishing another book before New Year now!

I can remember being on holiday with some friends in The Gambia (must have been around 2004ish), and we were sat in a bookshop having a few beers with the owner, as you do. It wasn't really like any bookshop you've been in, more a booth, and he kept sending a younger underling to go and get us beers out in the oppressive African heat.

Merry Christmas!

Sorry for not managing to post this on Christmas Day or even Boxing Day, everything got away from me somewhat towards the end!

I had a commission where I almost didn't have time to complete it before the deadline of Christmas Eve, but the timber didn't turn up until the Tuesday before (more on that project in another video and post later).

Luckily I got the children to help with the wrapping of the presents for my wife and making of one of them. My wife pretty much does all Christmas single handed, the presents, wrapping, Christmas dinner food, I'm good the rest of the year but this time it got to Christmas day and I think because I had been working right up to it I crashed and burned. Ended up having a long nap on Christmas morning (once presents were opened) and one in the afternoon/evening! I'm pretty useless if I stop for any reason!

We had a lovely relaxing day though, with lots of lovely food and gifts to each other. Yesterday we went to my families for the day which was great and still have my wife's family day to come, so the festivities aren't over yet!

I plan for us all to have an easy few days now, the children are watching a film as I write this and I've got two types of dough proving on the side (using new recipe books).

I feel so lucky to have such amazing family and friends, I'm truly blessed in that way, and I'm thankful to have so many people from around the world follow what we do here. It means the world to me, it really does, I love the comments and the emails I get, it makes what could be a lonely job really not. I hope if you're reading this you had a great day and manage to recharge your batteries before we hit 2025 running!

The Village Carpenter

I'm not sure I have any typical days. They all seem to be different, I suppose typical in the fact I'm working wood always, doing the odd jobs around this place that keep it running, and running about after my family and feeding them.

Tuesday was a good example of this and I had to reflect how I've become that image of a village carpenter, the little jobs coming to me and slotting into my schedule somehow. Friends popping by with a chair to fix or footstool to help make.

One job was for a plinth, to commemorate a lady who had lived for 94 years. I planed some oak and carved a simple inscription on to it (some dates blanked out to keep it a little private), not a huge job, but one that takes time to set up and complete.

As the rain hammered against my workshop, I listened to a book as I carved and thought about this lady I didn't know. I wondered if she'd been part of her community like me. An hour before I'd been in the post office, queuing to post some last minute Christmas orders to customers. In there I'd known four people, and met two more I knew as I left, This village has pulled my roots down and grounded me here.

That night we had tea at a friends (after I'd taken my eldest daughter to a hospital appointment), I work for them a few times a month, but there isn't many weeks in the year where we don't eat with these friends, friends so close they become like family. With childcare shared and swapped, where the school doesn't even question one of us picking up the other's child. Journeys to home filled with laugher and silly jokes shared over a long time.

The next day I had a farmer bring me some oak for something he wanted making. Brought in a stock box smelling strongly of sheep, the layers of dust on the wood so deep I'd never question the fact he says the oak has been milled 10 years and left drying in his barn. My brother has even done some tree work for him in the past, I could be working on the same tree as him, separated by a decade or more.

But the wood is little good, the using of the oak has cost me more in time. ripping out all the worm and splits. But I wonder if it's having the wood from his land actually used that's more important than the money saving of using it. I hope it is with the effort going into it, as I brush the brown dust from my jacket and hope I have enough from it to finish it before Christmas for him.

I'm never quite sure what I expected my life to be when I decided I wanted to be a carpenter, but this is more. Its not easy, I work hard and long hours and I could make far more money just being a "normal" carpenter on site somewhere, But this is more.

Adjustable Birch Ply Shelving Units

The start of this week has been taken up with this little commission of making a couple of shelving units. The house is quite modern so we took the approach of using birch ply with the bare edge showing.

They wanted them adjustable so a series of 5mm holes for shelf pins was drilled every 32mm.

It's made for a very minimalist set of shelves that work well in this modern house. Or at least I think it does...
