Seven Year Old Maker

The boy came into the shop the other day and said he had an idea. He needed some ply wood and for me to cut out what he drew.

He then spent some time drawwing out lots of different parts. I took them to the bandsaw and cut them out for him. The next morning he came into our room and the first thing he said was he'd been thinking about it and needed to cut some of the bits again as they were too small.

He then started to glue them up. We've talked lots about assembly and putting things together and he said to me that he would need to glue up a few times.

I lent him my clamps and gave him a brush and some glue and left him to it.

When he had finished I was just so genuinely impressed.

He'd managed to draw out all these bits in 2D on a piece of ply, visualising how he'd put them together to make a 3D shape. He's already said how he'd improve it and it was a great opportunity to talk about prototypes and show him some of my designs that have changed through the years.

It's lovely doing this stuff with him and watching his mind develop in this way.

  1. Brilliant - love the teeth.
Had an excellent talk by a lady working for a charity called Medical Detection Dogs. They can train a dog to react for people with Type 1 diabetes about to have problems like in the middle of the night - incredible - thought of you and your family.

  2. Clever boy, that's a great skill to have, the thinking part of the process is always the best, can't wait to see his next design.

  3. What a clever design! I've often pondered whether woodworking is a nature or nurture skill. I don't have anyone in my family that works with wood other than chain sawing up the occasional tree. In your case, your boy seems like a chip off the old block as we say. An argument for both cases.

  4. It's hard to believe your son is only seven! :o)

  5. That is awesome! I so admire people that can visualize things and then create them. I can do that with thoughts in my head to words, but never in the physical realm.

  6. New reader here. That is truly clever! I couldn't imagine from the drawn pictures what what happening, but that T-Rex is terrific.
