A Perfect Autumn Day

I love every season of the year.

They all give something to me. Autumn rolling it removes a bit of guilt in the evenings when I think I should be doing something outside. And a Sunday like this was just perfect for spending a day together at home.

This morning we got some apples in the dehydrator, then picked our first proper harvest of quinces in the 14 years of having a tree here. We wanted to see what we could do with them, so cooked them three ways. I'm looking forward to trying the results.

In the afternoon we went off to pick some hawthorn berries so I could make some recipes for a talk I'm writing. As always it was just lovely being outside together.

I love how full of berries our hedges are at the moment. So many different shades of red amongst the hawthorn haws, but also so many sloes, like grapes on some of the blackthorn.

We all tried some of the bullaces that I planted about 5 years ago as well. Where I grew up there were lots of wild bullaces and damsons, so it was nice to plant these in the hedge. I hope many a walker stumbles upon them in the future and thinks they self seeded there. A little tarter than a damson, but still good eating when really ripe, even better when cooked. My eldest made a apple and damson (the very last few) crumble for tea.

What a lovely time of year.
