So back on the Medieval Carpentry course in September, one of the carpenters, Gavin, had an axe with a wooden carved cover. I saw it and thought this was such a great idea.
I asked him if it was okay to copy it and make one for a magazine article. He was fine with it.
Gavin's axe cover -
It was a perfect fit.
Mine was carved with sycamore, a beautiful wood to work with.
I was quite pleased with this one. I might have to make some more!
Let me know what you think.

I really love quartersawn sycamore. I'm not sure if the species are the same but over here, quartersawn sycamore has a ton of flecking in it which is very beautiful in furniture.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice timber, not used nearly enough over here.
DeleteWow Kev! That is fantastic! I have never seen a wooden axe cover before, only leather ones.
ReplyDeleteI'd seen a few and knew they were used in the past, and wanted to get a cover for this one. Seemed like a good solution.
DeleteVery nice, though I wonder if they are more decorative than practical in a working environment?
ReplyDeleteI think, with a cover they are only used at the start and end of the day, you tend not to put them on when working or even in the working area, as more likely to leave your axe ready to go. So I think it's likely thye would have had some decoration on them to make them easy to identify. I'll do a post with another cover another carpenter had, that was much simpler, and possibly more likely.
DeleteAh that does make sense Kev…
