Ex Caged Birds A Couple Of Months On

Well it's not quite a couple of months but I'm really pleased with how well they're doing.
We did loose two in the first week when it dropped really cold but other than that they've been fine, they've even been laying in this cold snap we've been having! We've been having around 3 a eggs a day off nine birds and in this weather I don't think that's too bad!

I've put these pictures on so long as no one comments on how messy my garden is!
They're also doing a great job of getting rid of the weeds for me.
Some happy chickens.

  2. thats a good egg ratio
mind you these poor hens are genetically bred to bang out the eggs
they make lovely animals to keep dont they... much braver and ore friendly when they eventually settle down
good for you for getting them

    1. Yeah I was quite pleased with the number of eggs. Friendly is an understatement! My main consern when I go in the pen is that I might tread on one - always under your feet!

    1. Not quite free range as they're in my massive veg and soft fruit garden at the moment where they're on weed duty! But it's still a fair sized pen - they haven't really explored the one end of it yet!

  5. I live near a small city in the USA and it is amazing how many people have chickens in a smaller area than you have, and they call them free range. I know it is all in the marketing but I think you are as close to "free range" as anyone gets. They have room to run around and eat bugs and fresh greens, but they also have protection from predators.
I had a chicken feed customer who attached chicken wire to the frames of old vacation travel trailers (I think you call them caravans?) and kept the chickens there. He would tow them to a different location to get the chickens a new spot to "graze."

    1. I know what your saying but I guess I'm a purist when it comes to things like that. free range here would only last a few days before a fox or a dog walker had them so this is the best I can do.
