A Cake For Playgroup

I think no cake will ever be judged as much as a cake made by the only man in a mainly female playgroup!
It was my turn to make the cake this week - luckily I nailed it!
I wanted a show stopper to impress and kept thinking of different cakes I could make. Then I decided that simple was best and went for a simple Victoria Sponge Sandwich.
The sponge was made using the normal recipe (8oz of flour, 8oz of sugar and 8oz of butter, four eggs and a teaspoon of baking powder) then I added butter icing and homemade damson jam to the middle and dusted the top with icing sugar.
A simple cake that everyone likes, sometimes you can't beat a classic.
Everyone was very complimentary!
What cake would you have made (I need ideas for when it's my turn again!)?

  1. Well that looks absolutely lovely, well done Kev, better than I could do. However, I have no trouble with this one, it's the Pioneer Woman's big chocolate birthday cake... Yum!...http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ree-drummond/big-chocolate-birthday-cake-recipe.html

    1. Now that looks good! Trouble is I'd want to eat it all by myself!

  2. Your sponge cake looks good there Kev. When it comes to baking that's about the extent of my knowledge... Good...Not Good. Never baked a thing in my life but I do know when ever you wish to impress a bunch of Women the more chocolate the better. Individually they all claim to not be fond of chocolate but as with most generalities it always seems to work out that way despite the claims to the contrary.

    1. I used to be the same but I've really got into it since I've been looking after the kids full time. It's an nice activity to do with them and I get cake in the bargain!
Chocolate is also a way to impress me!

    1. We never buy cake any more. If I want some I have to bake it. And I like a lot of cake!

  8. I used to hate the cake sessions at playgroup when it came round to my turn as I am not a cake baker.

  9. I bake so little. We are not much of sweet eaters here but once in a while I make some muffins or a banana bread. Your cake looks nice.
Though I did start making some vegan ice creams this last summer we did enjoy those :O)
