Unusual Commission - Miss Matched Drawer Unit

My carpentry has pretty much ceased during lockdown, but I have got an unusual commission to try to fit in around childcare.

This one is for one of my toughest customers - my mother!

She has been collecting drawers and baskets for a few years now with the idea of making a unit to fill and alcove in their house.

I don't think this will be an easy unit to make! There is so many bits to it, I think I will be planning it out and marking it for a long while before I start cutting wood up though!

It will go higher than you can comfortably use a drawer, steps will have to be used as my mum is quite short, and the unit will be higher than me! But it will be for things that aren't used that often.

What do you think? Do you like the idea?

  1. Love the idea! Allthough I would let the beige ones with the glass front appear in two different areas. But these kind of furniture is so interesting to look at. Very curious how it is going to be once finished.

  6. I have worked as a professional furniture maker and antique restorer virtually all my life. In the 1980's, a lady brought an ornate sideboard into our shop. It was missing two curved front drawers. She asked if we could reproduce them to make the cabinet whole again. It turned out she and her sister were in an inheritance war, and the sister had confiscated the two missing drawers. We obliged and she was pleased. What next? A lady showed up at the shop with two drawers and asked if we could reproduce a sideboard that they would fit into. She had pictures of the original, she said, and could we do it? Of course we could! We had a strong ethic of client privacy, and we always wondered if the two ever spoke or knew that each had ended up with a 'partially' reproduced sideboard from their Mom. Stories from long ago....

  7. I left out the most fun part: We didn't really need the pictures, because the original cabinet, sans drawers, was sitting in the back. All we had to do was measure up and reproduce! In the end, she was amazed at how 'exact' our reproduction of the cabinet was. We simply said thank you.
