Comfort Food

As the nights pull rapidly in I crave comfort food. I'm always a little sad to see summer go and would happily hold onto it for a lot longer yet. But I see the fact I can happily cook the food I'm really good at as a small consolation prise.

First one this week was shepherds pie.
I take my time making it, it normally takes a good hour and half by the time I've got everything cooked and together, but man is it worth it! I do enough to see us through two meals.

While I was cooking that my eldest came in and cooked one of my favourite crumbles - blackberry and apple. I love that she is happy just to get on with this job and it's always nice to cook together.

I made a beautiful autumn tea and was also the first night of the season that I lit the fire (I swept it that day as well).

What's your go-to comfort food? Something that makes you feel warm inside as the weather gets colder (tonight's was pork, cider and apple stew - another favourite of mine).

    1. Yes, I love a good soup. I often do a beetroot soup with fresh bread.

    1. My mate does an incredible rungdan beef curry, takes them all day to cook it. It's out of this world.

  3. The other day, Dan happily reminded me that it's almost soup season. Funny that, because he never cared for soup until I started putting all our summer leftovers into empty peanut batter jars and sticking them into the freezer. One of those jars (defrosted) with a pint of bone broth added and simmered on the wood stove is our favorite winter lunch. No way to really remember all of the tidbits scraped into the jars, so different every day and no way to write down a repeatable recipe.

That said, your shepherd pie looks really good! That's a childhood favorite I'd forgotten about.

    1. I like the sound of that! Although I think I need some more freezers if I was to attempt it! I keep saying I'm going to can some soups - do you have a soup you can?

  4. Homemade soup. My favorite is butternut squash made with coconut milk and lots of onions. All whizzed in the blender until it is silky smooth. Paired with a grilled cheese sandwich, comfort can't help but follow!
    Enjoy your goodies, Kev!

    1. I do love a good squash soup . If the rats leave me any then I'm going to make some this autumn. Some years I make too much soup and dehydrate it to use s a homemade cuppa soup!

  5. Polenta ( baked with spinach and feta, or chard and blue cheese). Good comfort food hot or cold.

    1. I've only ever cooked polenta once! It was great but just isn't something I'm used to cooking. Got a recipe you could point me at to try it again. Fairly sure the children have never tried it.
