I looked around a house for some family the other day, it was gorgeous, but far too big of a project for the money. These days it seems that fixer-uppers are almost as much money as one done up, which is a real shame.
It had some great features, an old stable and 3.5 acres! But my favourite feature was the old meat safe, I love seeing these out in the wild.
Not sure they'd be much good in the heat we've been having though! But then again there are flies everywhere at the moment. I have made one in the past to sell, and it's often something I think about making again.
Do you think you'd find use for a meat safe?
Hi Kev, my Nan had a floor standing Meat Safe in the back of her large walk in Pantry which was always cold even on the hottest day. My Mum had one too when I was small. I still think they have a use today for food storage. A vintage one is on my list at some point in the future. I think part of the problem is that many people do not know they exist, how they were used and their relevance. Fridges are just taken as the norm today, fridges were only just coming into the equation when I was little. Mum's first fridge was when I was about 3 years old. The meat safe went when she got the fridge. Today we tend to store most things in the fridge and yet not everything needs to be stored in a fridge. You really need a very cold larder/pantry to make the meat safe work effectively. They should build larders/pantry again as standard on all new housing. The meat safe though could re-designated for storage of cheese or other food stuffs. It is a good idea, perhaps you might market them on a built for purpose tailored version for those who are after one but cannot locate what they are after. There are also cheese safes, egg safes, herb racks etc. Take care Tricia aka Pattypan

ReplyDeleteI do not believe I have ever lived in a place where the climate was cool enough to use such a device (or the houses well insulated enough).
Like TB, I have never heard of a meat safe until today.
