Wooden Potting Tray - Metal bottom - for Soil Blocking

I had a customer ask me about making a tray for their soil blocking. It's something I've always been interested in, basically making compost blocks that you grow your seedlings in instead of using pots.

I knew it would encounter more moisture so I suggested adding a glavanisied steel bottom to it. I said I wouldn't leave the wet compost in there too long, but this should certainly help it see many years of use.

I think the metal bottom also looks really smart and I love my customers potting shed - looks a great place to be.

It might be something I offer off-the-shelf in the future, but currently I can make them to order and get the steel in for it. Find my currently range of trays here on my Etsy store or send me an email (in my contacts page) and I can create the tray that's right for you.

Custom Wooden Potting Tray With Metal Bottom

A few weeks back I had an email from a potential customer who wanted to have a potting tray made with a metal bottom. I talk to them about how I could change my design slightly to make it fit.

They also wanted it stained darker. This isn't normally something I offer as storage space is my main issue with these trays and I like to keep a good stock of them and get them shipped next day. They offered to pay for stain so I agreed.

I think the finished tray looks pretty good, it's 1mm galvanised steel on the bottom (supported by 9mm plywood) and treated with Osmo oil. It was a pair of trays but I had the first already packaged when I saw the message from the customer about a picture!

Hopefully I'll get a picture of them in their new home as well!

Wooden Potting Tray In Its Natural Habitat

I got sent these pictures by a happy customer the other day and they were just so lovely I had to share them.

I love this potting area! It just looks like such a great space to work and a lovely space to spend a bit of time looking at the view!

Double Potting Trays In A Potting Shed

I got sent a few pictures of some of my potting trays in use the other day and I just love to see it!

These must have bene early ones as they're built with reclaimed timber. I make them with new timber now as I could never get enough of the reclaimed stuff - that timber is now reserved for my range of baskets instead.

I just think this is such a gorgeous potting shed!

Caring For You Wooden Potting Tray

Okay, so this video isn't for everyone - it's for people that have purchased a potting tray from me in the last few years. I want everyone to get the longest life possible from them so I put together some care instructions. All you need is a brush, a cotton rag, some linseed oil and some gloves. It takes about 10 minutes tops, and is really worth doing.

Thank you to anyone that has purchased an item from me. It makes the world of difference to us as a family and to my little business.

You can view all the ones available for purchase by clicking here.

Custom Potting Tray

I quite often get requests for potting trays in custom sizes, but this one is the biggest yet!

You can see it here next to one of my medium trays. I think you could tip out a whole bag of compost on there to sort out and mix! Hope the customer enjoys using it!

Medium Wooden Potting Tray - New Timber

So I thought I'd do a few posts with some products I currently sell online.

The first is my potting trays, ideal to keep your greenhouse or potting shed tidy!

The potting trays I make in three standard sizes - medium, large and jumbo. This is the medium one, I tend to make small batches and can never predict if I'll sell more medium or large ones - basically I tend to sell more of the one I made less of!

I do make trays from reclaimed timebr but due to a few different reasons (and volume of sales) I'm struggling to get enough to meet demand. So I've make these with joinery quality softwood. The base is rebated into the sides to provide extra strength.

When I have finished them I then oil them with one coat of linseed oil that I have added a natural pigment to to darken them down a bit, then once that is dry I oil them a second time with just plain boiled linseed oil.

The medium trays are 58cm wide by 40cm deep and about 17cm high.  Available on Etsy Now!

Homestead Shop

A bit of shameless self promotion on this post for my products I'm starting to sell online.

I started making some homestead and garden related products to sell after my mother got me to make a wooden potting tray because she could only find plastic ones online or in the shops to buy.

When these started to sell well I decided to make a range of products that should hopefully make jobs easier, be nice to use and look good.
