Making A Wooden Peg With An Axe - Video

After my post on Monday about the pegs for holding down the weed matting, I thought I'd do a short video on how I make them using an axe and a little pruning saw.
I've hopefully took on board some points from my last video and as the camera is on a tripod no one should get sea sick this time! Hopefully my videos will keep improving, let me know if there's any more you want me to do.

  1. You have got the patience of Job, Kev. Do you sharpen your own axe? It looks really sharp.

    1. This one came really sharp when I brought it, but I hit something metal with it so had to start over again, it's a nice process sharpening it slowly with a oil stone, it's ground just right and that's the key thing to getting things sharp.

  2. Excellent video Kev, and love the beard too, very handsome! (Don't worry Claire, I'm old enough to be his mother....) Gosh, yes, that axe does look sharp, could you do another video on how to sharpen axes and knives and all that? That wood seemed to cut like butter.

    1. You're making me blush! Sharpening is another passion of mine, I'd probably be too boring with it all! I'll make a note to film it next time I sharpen anything.

  3. In the 1960's there was a little old guy who moved to Alaska. He built himself a cabin on a lake, using only the most rudimentary hand tools. He filmed his work and adventures, in 8mm film. Later two videos were made of his film. I can't remember his name, but I do remember being astounded that someone could make so fine a home with such primitive tools. I guess there are still people out there who can make things with an axe, which for some reason or other I am glad to know.

I've read the book and it's great, the guy is called DickProenneke I think. An axe is a great tool if used right. I'll do a repost about a course I went on a few years ago later in the week, it was really interesting.

  4. Feel like having a go at making one of those pegs myself except that the only axe we have is so big I can hardly lift it! Nice video Kev. Enjoyed watching it. Could do with one about pruning. Need to prune our fruit trees this year and feel nervous about doing so.....

    1. Make sure you can handle the axe before you can try it - I don't want you cutting your fingers off! A hatchet would be ideal for this, I'm a bit of an axe snob so I've got with an old Elwell (for chickens and kindling) or my Gransfors Bruks for camping and bushcraft. Having a good quaility one makes all the difference, it'll hold the edge then when you get it sharp.
